How To Tell A Story

Would you like to tell a story at an upcoming All Y’all live event? We would love that. For each event, we curate a compelling evening of stories from our local community. We have three requirements:

Your story must be told without notes.

Your story must be true and have happened to you (not someone else!).

It cannot be longer than 10 minutes.

How does it work?

Typically, storytellers first reach out on our storyteller hotline (318) 582-0665 or via email. Then, our team meets with storytellers to workshop their story so that it’s great. Not all stories make it to a live event. Some only appear on our podcast.

How do I tell a GREAT story?

Great question! Here’s a few tips:

Pick a single, transformative moment from your life.

10 minutes isn’t enough time to tell your life story, but it’s the perfect amount of time for you to share a moment that defined you. Did you meet someone? Try something new? How did it turn out? We’d love to hear it!

Have a beginning, middle, and end.

Good stories take an audience on a journey. Draw people in with rich details describing people or places. Then, set up the stakes for your story. Describe what happened to you and why it matters. Lastly, remember that the last words the audience hears are the most important – make them count.

Don’t worry about dates, times, or people’s names.

Sometimes we get too caught up in the fine details. What makes a good story isn’t precise dates or rattling off names – it’s describing how you felt in the moment.

Take a deep breath and have fun!

Everyone in the All Y’all audience wants to hear your story. If you’re nervous, it’s okay to stop, take a breath and collect yourself. We’re all in this together!
